Vera Farmiga Used Instagram To Argue With The Prime Minister Of Canada That She Needs A Trip Home To The U.S.
While some things are opening up in our post-pandemic world, like patios and Disneyland, others – like the U.S./Canadian border – remain closed. But you don’t have to tell Vera Farmiga this. Vera, a U.S. citizen, is currently in Toronto, Canada, where she was filming a project. And she’s been stuck in Canada for going on eight weeks. According to Vera, she’s trapped in the land of ice, snow, random U’s thrown into words, and a never-ending supply of maple-flavored snacks. She’s so desperate to leave, she’s been pleading with the Prime Minister of Canada, Justin Trudeau, to do something, anything, so that she may hop across the border and see her family for a bit. The only problem is, she doesn’t know him personally or have his contact information. Actually, her plan is not unlike a desperate fan trying to get a shout-out from a pop star. Vera has been trying to get JT’s attention by tagging him in multiple Instagram posts.
As a Canadian resident who lives but a brief jaunt from the U.S./Canadian border, I am somewhat well-versed in what’s currently allowed for cross-border travel (I would do anything to cross that border and sniff the inside of a Trader Joe’s once again). Since March 2020, the actual, physical border has been closed for all non-essential travel but you can travel for business by airplane. Of course, there are many, many travel restrictions, like COVID-19 testing, getting yanked off a flight should you show any symptoms and a mandatory 14-day quarantine. Canada still has a warning against all non-essential travel. So if Vera wanted to pop back into the U.S. for a weekend trip, she’d face a mandatory 14-day quarantine after returning to Canada. She’s very much not feeling that, and she’s taken to Instagram to plead her case to Justin Trudeau.
Vera argues that she’s fully vaccinated and has a work permit, so there’s no reason why she would have to sit in some lonely hotel room for half a month, waiting to make sure she’s not bringing a highly contagious virus back into the country with her (her family lives on a farm in Hudson Valley, New York, which is about 440 miles from Toronto). Also, she would like Justin Trudeau to know that her visit is the exact opposite of non-essential, because her husband Renn Hawkey and her kids Gytta and Fynn, are very essential to her. Very recently, Canada announced a month-long extension in its border restrictions, with a possible re-opening starting on July 5. So, whoever is running the Prime Minister’s Instagram account better expect four more weeks of finding @justinpjtrudeau tagged in posts from the star of The Conjuring films.

Justin Trudeau has yet to respond to Vera. But that doesn’t mean she’s hit a dead end. Along with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Vera also made sure to tag New York Senator Chuck Schumer, Buffalo and Niagara Falls district U.S. Representative Brian Higgins, Canadian Minister of Health and former Minister of Status of Women Patty Hajdu, Ontario Premier Doug Ford, and finally, President Joe Biden, and Vice President Kamala Harris. Let it be known from this day forward that if you work in customer service, hope with your whole heart you never have to face Vera Farmiga. She won’t just ask to speak to the manager. She’ll want the daytime manager, the night manager, the weekend swing shift manager, the supervisor, the owner, and at least 51% of current sitting board members. Vera demands answers!
